Lentil 4
Dhal with Sambaar Powder

Pointer 1: This is a great recipe if you don't like the taste of onion, garlic or garam masala.

  • 2 cups lentil (orange or yellow)
  • Enough cups of water to cook
  • 2 green chillies
  • 1/2 Tbsp. sambaar podi (use may curry powder found in grocery stores)
  • 1 vine-ripened tomato chopped
  • 1 Tbsp. chopped fresh coriander
  • 1/2 tsp. asafoetida
  • 1 Tbsp. tamarind extract or lemon juice
  • 1 Tbsp. olive oil or canola oil
  • Salt to taste

Cook dhal until well done. Sauté in oil, green chillies, sambaar powder and tomatoes. Add to dhal and let it boil for another 5 minutes. Add tamarind or lemon extrat, salt to taste. After one stir, remove from stove. Add chopped coriander right before serving.

Goes with with Indian rotis or rice.
