Bisi Bela Bhath - A delectable, sumptuous and healthy mix of vegetables, spices, lentil and rice
Ingredients:
Dry roast and powder spices
- 2 cloves
- 1" cinnamon stick
- 2 Tbsp. coriander seeds
- 2 tsp. cumin seeds
- 6 dry red chillies (increase number for more heat)
- 2 Tbsp. urad dhal
- 2 Tbsp. chana dhal
- 1/4 shredded coconut
Steam cook or sauté cut vegetables. The following are recommended.
- 1/2 cup Beans
- 1/2 cup Carrot
- 1/4 cup Peas
- 1 cup Eggplant
- 1/4 cup Okra
- 1/2 Potatoes
- 1 cup Tomatoes
- 6 3" pieces Drumstick
- 1/2 Onion (optional)
- 3 or 4 slit green chillies
Sauté
Chopped red onion, green chillies for 5 minutes. Add tomatoes and cook for 2 minutes. Add all the cut vegetables and sauté until half cooked. Add salt per taste.
Pressure cook until soft
- 1 1/2 cups of rice
- 1/2 cup of Toor dhal
- 1 tsp. of turmeric powder
In the same pot as the cooked vegetables, add the cooked rice and dhal. Spread the spice mix over them. Add half cup of tamarind juice and salt. Do not over salt as some have been added to the cooked vegetables. Mix well. Cook with closed lid until the raw smell of tamarind disappears.
Remove pot from stove. Finally garnish with curry leaves and some fresh coriander.
Temper
Mustard seeds in about 3 to Tbsps. of ghee. (Optional) Roast peanuts/cashew in the ghee. Spread over finished dish.
Serve with papad and a side dish of dry spicy curry, preferably potato. |
