Black bean lentil spiced with healthy ingredients

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup black lentil (kaala channa)
  • 2 tsps. turmeric
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1" ginger, mashed
  • 2 Tbps. red onion chopped
  • 2 green chillies, diced
  • 1/4 tsp. cumin seeds
  • 1/2 tsp. coriander powder
  • 1/2 tsp. cumin powder
  • 1/2 tsp. red chillie powder
  • 1/2 tsp. garam masala
  • 1 Tbsp. chopped fresh coriander
  • 2 tsps. lime juice
  • 3 Tbsps. oil to sauté
  • Salt to taste


Method:

Soak fresh black lentil overnight or for at least 8 hours.

Wash and cook lentil under pressure. This will reduce cooking time. If cooked regular over stove, the lentils will take at least an hour to cook well.

In a pan use 1 Tbsp. canola oil. When warm, add the fresh cumin seeds, then Sauté the following. Onions, green chillies, ginger and garlic adding a little more oil if necessary.

Add the cooked lentil to the spices. Mix well. Add some water and let it all cook in the pan for 10 minutes. Now add all the dry spices and salt. If the mixture is too dry, add some more water and let it stay on the stove on low heat for about 8 minutes.

Garnish with fresh coriander and serve with rice or Indian breads or puris.
