Black Lentil dhal

Pointer 1: Use raw or canned black lentil.


  • 2 cups raw lentil
  • 1 medium sized red onion chopped
  • 2" fresh ginger sliced thin
  • 2 green chillies slit
  • 2 tsp. cumin seeds
  • 2 Tbsp. garlic-ginger paste
  • 2 tomatoes chopped
  • 2 tsps. mixed masala
  • 1/4 cup cream
  • Oil to sauté
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 Tbsps. fresh coriander
  • a dollop of butter

Cook lentils under pressure.

Take a pan, use 1 Tbsp. canola oil. Splurt cumin seeds, add onion and chillies. Sauté until onions are done. Add garlic-ginger paste. Mix well, then add the tomatoes. Cover and cook the tomatoes for about 8 minutes.

Add the cooked dhal and 1/4 cup water with the above ingredients. Add the masala powder and cream. Finally add the butter and mix well. Garnish with coriander.

Serve with Indian breads.
